front wheel bearing?

1985 f150 4x4 w/ manual locking hubs, can someone who has changed bearings on this truck or similar tell me how much of a pita it will be and possibly any pointers thanks guys. it has pretty substantial outside tire wear. or possibly just alignment, its not noisy going down the road, and its not noisy while turning, thanks

Lift each wheel off the ground a little bit and grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and wiggle it to see how much play you have. Then grab it at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and wiggle it again. Play at both places could be a wheel bearing out of adjustment. A bad wheel bearing will give you a growling/roar, louder when turning a certain direction.

Play only at 12 and 6 could be a balljoint. Play only at 9 and 3 could be a steering linkage/tie rod problem.

These trucks are definitely old enough now where you are going to have to replace some suspension parts once in awhile.

you might want to visit an alignment shop before tackling new wheel bearings. the outside of my tires are wearing more than elsewhere because my wheels are out of alignment (too much positive camber). I hope to make an appointment soon to get it straightened out.

Take a look at the wheels while facing the front of the truck, on flat ground, and after the truck has moved only forward. The top of the wheels should lean out further than the bottom by a little but not a lot.

My front right tire has too much positive camber (top of tire is tilting out) and it is very obvious. I also had my front bearings repacked the other day by someone I now believe to not know what he was doing. The reason I say that is because I found a 3/4 socket still on the motor mount bolt and a 7/16 wrench on the bleeder cap of the front left caliper! I won't be taking anything I own there again.

How can I know if the bearings were tightened correctly? I drove it about 6 miles the other day and the lockers are hot to the touch when I stop.

The only way to know is take it all apart and go through it again.

And if you question his skills (And I would question anyone that leaves tools behind), Get it checked ASAP!

Losing a steering tire on the road is not something I wish for anyone to go through!

-Enjoy

I'm going to take it to another place today to get it checked out. I don't want to loose a steering tire either.
