alternative coolant flush procedure
When I was with the fleet the had a large number of Flush procedures that caused more problems and a second oil cooler replacement.
We tried a experiment. We devised a way to filter while flushing with good success and adopted it from then on. This was in a shop environment but can easily and cheaply be done at home. IIRC less than $20.00 for parts.
What we did was install a cheap whole house plastic water filter between the engine water outlet/thermostat houseing and the radiator inlet. Running the engine while flushing with the chemicals the particles would be in suspension while circulateing and the filter would extract more solids.
When finished with the flush we simply removed the filter and adapters reflushed with distilled water and filled the system.after hooking everything back up.
This was in no way a scientific type test all I can say is it did work. We had significant drop in failuers and we caught 50% more solids per flush.
Our thinking was simple the engines after running several hours were too hot to work with. While waiting for them too cool gravity would cause heavyer solids to drop out of suspension and since the coolant had little force when just draining this method would work better. This proved out true.
We adopted this practice shop wide and never had a repeat oil cooler failure again from stopping up.
