I have a quick heater hose question. Looking at where the heater hoses go into the firewall from the front of the truck, does the left one go to the water pump and right one go to the intake manifold fitting?
I had the same question today… then I remembered that the left hose went to the H2o pump and the right was hooked to the intake… not sure that correct but it's how it was hooked up on my truck.
I don't have any black sealant on my '96. The hoses connect directly on to the aluminum tubes of the heater core. Just the two hose clamps.
Sounds like your's may have leaked as some point and the previous owner RTV'ed it.
No, I know what black sealant he's talking about. Mine has it too. It's used to seal off where the tubes pass thru the firewall. Just grab the clamps with pliers and pull them out... the foam will get out of your way or come off.
As for the heater core being directional, I think I read somewhere that if you connect it backwards from the way the factory had it you could get gurgling noises at startup. It's supposed to feed in at the bottom and return from the top. Not sure which line is which where they come out side by side at the firewall but it's not much trouble to take the core access panel off and have a look.
There is no bottom or top.
The header tank seals to the core in the middle, and the coolant can only flow down to the bottom and up the other side.
I sliced one in half for the 80-86 forum a couple of years back.
Pics are there, but I have no way to find them.
