starter issue: manual or auto?

to ford six,i can see the grease idea. as I said, the starter works 90-95% of the time...good healthy strong starts. every now and then, it does the grrtttcchh thing where I tap it a time or two more and it's fine. sometimes it happens only occasionally and other times, it does it a bunch of times. as I said, the old starter, same kind, did the same thing, only most all the time. we have had this one for a year..around 4,000mi. if taking it off and working on it helps, that beats going 50 odd miles to the nearest Autozone....again...free swap out with warranty, or try working on it and save a trip. can a few chingers on fly wheel cause the starter to not fully engage? the intermittent thing?
