I am in the process of rebuilding my C6 transmission. It started out in a late model SB case and I am moving the innards over to a late model BB case and rebuilding it at the same time. When I took the low-reverse clutch out of the SB case, I took out 4 steel plates, 4 lined discs, the wave plate, and the pressure plate. My rebuild kit came with 5 lined discs, which I thought was odd. So I put the clutch pieces in the BB case exactly how they had come out of the SB case. There is about 1/4" from the top of the pressure plate to the bottom of the snap ring groove. This seems excessive, and if I use air pressure to engage the piston, I can still spin the clutch hub by hand. My question is this: should there be a 5th steel plate and lined disc in this setup? If so, where can I get a steel plate?
You likely need to add another fiber and steel plate. There are some C6's that use 6 fiber plates depending on pressure plate size and case design. Put the 5 fibers and steels with the wave plate and it should come out right.
As mentioned there are different numbers of clutch plates in different models..Keep adding clutches until you end up with a clearance of around .060"..
