replacing fuel pump help

So I believe the fuel pump is gone out on my 06 today. I am looking to drop the tank since I have a service bed on my truck. I need advice on how to drop the tank and replace the pump and sender unit on this truck. I work on my old jeeps all the time but never done a pump befor. Also I have probably a little over half a tank of disel in it and no where to siphon all that into so I am looking to do this with the tank full

The pump isn't in the tank it's under the drivers side door on the frame rail with the filter in it. No reason to drop the tank unless the fuel sending unit isn't working. Takes about 30 minutes to change the fuel pump. 3 bolts, 4 lines, and 2 electrical connectors.

The sender went out about a month ago. So I do not have an in tank pump only the one on the frame rail?

The fuel pick up, and level sender are in the tank. The fuel pump(HFCM) is on the framerail, under the drivers seat.

Dropping a full tank isn't hard. I had to drop the 44gal tank on my Excursion when it was almost full. Just gotta go slow, find the balance point, and use a good floor jack and a length of 2x12 to support it.

So how can I test the pump on the frame rail to make sure it's bad?

1. listen for it to run...it will run about 20 seconds after you turn the key on.
2. check fuel pressure at fuel regulator with gauge.

What symptoms are you having, to make you think the fuel pump is bad?

I went to costco today and when I came back out the truck hesitated to start but it did start. Then went to the post office and came out and went to start it and it will just crank but will not turn over. Seems like it's not getting fuel

are you absolutely sure you have fuel in the tank?

if you have an android phone do a search for torque pro. You need some gauges to diagnose this. it is unlikely that your fuel pump has failed.

I just filled up a couple days ago I andhave driven about 88 miles since then but iam going to put some disel in when iI get home. But ireally dondon't think that's it

There is way more than just fuel issues to keep a 6.0 from starting. The 6.0 is an electronically controled, hydraulicaly operated injection system. There is a tech folder that lists all the different tests to be done to properly diagnose your problem. To properly diagnose you will need a scanner or something that will read live data at the least.

Does it fire up right away when cold? If it does I would start reading in the tech folder about hot start problems and how to go about diagnosing it.

Sounds just like my problem, ended up being a blown o-ring at the oil pump. Ran fine, shut off, wouldn't start back up.

Open the upper fuel filter cap and have some one turn on the key with you watching the filter housing. If fuel fills the housing your pump is working.

So it appears to be a hot start problem. When I got home from running errands yesterday after it had been sitting for a few hours and I went to start it and it started right up no problems. So I drove it to a local shopshould have a ddiagnosis this morning.
