AC Plenum Help

Hello, I am hoping I can get some help. I am in the middle of replacing the heater core in my 95 Ford Ranger 4cyl. I am having a bear of a time getting the AC Plenum box on the engine compartment side off the fire wall so I can remove the heater box. I have removed 3 nuts but I cannot find the forth, or is there a forth? I have removed the right inner fender but still cannot find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

1 or more of those outer plenum bolts/nuts needs to be removed from the other side of the firewall (from inside the cabin) and you will likely only gain access to those after removing the dash. That's how it's set up in my '94, and also my '88 for that matter. the '95 model year did get a new dash though so the plenum removal process might be different than with mine. It was definitely designed with assembly in mind though and not repair work. There was a very heated discussion between me and the plenum, albeit one sided, as I fought it out.

Let's step back a minute though. For both of my Rangers the heater core is 'inside' the cabin. I just remove 2 screws from underneath the passenger side dash and the heater core drops out. That's all there is to it. Like I mentioned at some point Ford changed the design, so you had to remove the dash to access the heater core, but I'm not sure if that was already the case in '95. But even after that point I think the heater core is still located in the cabin. Could be wrong though.

I would suggest that if the heater core tubes protrude through the firewall, that would mean that the heater core itself is inside the cab. I do not own one to examine, but it should be pretty obvious. OTOH, if you have removed all the fasteners you can see underhood, you should be able to flex the plenum away from the firewall enough to note pretty much where the remaining still-attached fastener is located. Don't overexert in moving the plenum as it will break if you give it enough of a yank.
