Fuel flow question

I am working on a 2002 E-350 with some low power issues and white smoke under load. I have checked fuel pressure at the plug on the left head and have over 45 psi KOEO. I also checked the flow and it seems to be a fast trickle, shouldn't I be seeing a significant flow from this test port?

Thank you, Bill

Fuel pressure needs to be checked at wide open throttle, under load. If it's only a trickle with the engine off, it's a pretty safe bet it will be low if it's tested the right way though.

That is what I suspected. Thanks for the quick reply PiKachu.

No problem at all. Is that a steel tank in that year van? If it is, it may very well be the coating inside the tank is delaminating and plugging up the in-tank screens.

Yes, it does have the steel tank and was not aware that was a problem. I was leaning towards the pickup being broken, there is less than 1/4 tank of fuel, and was going to drop the tank anyway.
Would the steel tank in the Van have the same setup as the Trucks and benefit from the "Hutch mod"? I do not assume anything anymore LOL.
I did get the Van back together enough to check the fuel pressure running and it dropped to less than 24 psi, torque braking it for about 10 seconds. So that tells the story.
Thanks again, Bill

Yeah, if it dropped that quick there's a restriction somewhere. AFAIK, the innards are essentially the same on the van. There should be a mixing chamber with a couple screens in it. That nonsense gets eliminated and replaced by an external filter with the Hutch mod.

The van has a steel tank with some form of coating on the inside. I've heard the 2002 is different than the earlier SDs with the 7.3L, but I can't remember if it was the better one or the worse one. A number of members with steel tanks have had the inside coating flake off and clog the pick-up screen with stuff that looks like translucent cottage cheese.

Even if that's not the issue, it sounds like you're going to drop the tank to find out what it is. I'd get the Hutch Mod kit before dropping the tank... but I don't know how much I'd want to drive the truck while the fuel pressure is dropping like that.

It's possible your fuel line quick-disconnects seals have failed and the fuel pump is sucking air.

A reminder about fuel pump cooling-if the pump has run for awhile with reduced flow, the electrical windings and bearings can get hot, reducing length of life. The diesel flowing through the pump is what keeps it cool.

Thanks Tugley,Sparky for the additional input.
I do plan on dropping the tank for the hutch mod, however all kits I have seen advertised so far state their kits do not fit the E series due to different tank configuration. Looks like some phone calls are in order.
I also plan on replacing the pump, as I suspect in may have been damaged and it is the original one on top of that.
