I have a 2012 E 350 Super Duty Extended van I use for the expediting business. It has a 4pd trans. I have 53400 miles on in and today it went in to limp mode. I was on the road, and where I pulled off an exit, I was near a Ford Dealer. They aren't done with the diagnosis yet but more than 30 codes came up from the transmission. I was told it just might be an electrical problem and not the trans, but should find out the whole story. This the first time I've a had a problem with a trans since buying all Fords since '85.
I;m hoping this was a rare glitch and not a chronic problem Ford is having with transmissions from 2012 and up.
If somebody has heard of some big problems with late model Ford trans, let me know. I need reliable trucks to be in business. I have a '05, same model with 520,000 miles on it and never had one problem with the trans.
Turns out the the problem was 1 corroded wire at the fuse box under the hood leading to the trans. There's keyholes in the wheel well near a wire bundles and rain/salt can get onto it. My guess this how a wire was corroded. Been sealing those holes. Trans itself was fine.
Typically when a sub-systems fails and triggers so many DTC's all at once its the fault of a cable or connector.
Its smart to seal those holes especially if near any vital connector. Similarly any connector can benefit with a dab or two of dielectric grease. While some can and do go the life of the vehicle without incident others will develop corrosion that eventually causes a failure such as you've experienced.
Oddly enough it seems connectors under the hood are more prone to this sort of thing, much more so than ABS wheel sensors, transmission connectors etc---strange indeed.
Anyway glad that's all that was "wrong" with your van---haven't yet heard of too many major problems with the newer E-Series transmissions.
