2005 Explorer Transmission

2005 Explorer Transmission
Trans completely out, no D, R, 2nd, 3rd nothing. Tried with/without OD, Adv Trac, 4x4 hi and low no codes or any hint that it was going to go. Wife shifted into reverse one day and nothing. It was completely rebuilt 2 (maybe 20k miles since) years ago due to 3rd going out (servo pack) but is now out of warranty.
Question is what should I look for? Is this something I can take care of without dropping the trans......I'm at the point now where I think I should go the route of picking up a trans from Auto Zone etc. for half the price it cost to rebuild (with 3x the warranty) and doing it myself.

If its full of fluid and doesn't move the chances of it being something short of removing the transmission is slim, it could be stripped splines or a failed pump.
Both of which is common and a sudden "no-go" and will require it will have to come out.
If it has a dipstick the transmission is a 5R55E.
If no dipstick the transmission is a 5R55S/W
