Fan Clutch Question

My 76 F250 CS has a 390 with A/C and it appears that my fan clutch is not engaging. I don't hear the roar of the fan when things get hot.
I purchased a new heavy duty replacement at NAPA but the bolt pattern on the clutch don't match those on the fan. Returned it for a regular duty clutch and the same situation. The fan is a Ford 7 blade.
With the A/C condenser sitting in front of my radiator, I need the fan to pull big time. Anyone experience this situation before and what was your remedy?
Maybe a source other than NAPA?

Thx
Bob

Your 7 blade fan may be from a different engine/vehicle.. Try a fan clutch from a 76+ 460...

There's a link in the Tech Info sticky (FE engine section) on fan clutches.

mebe2k brought up a good point. There is a note on the rad support that reads 'New Eng '90) Now way of knowing what year the 390 is, just that it was replaced in 1990.
The bolt pattern on the fan was maybe ¼" larger than the clutch bolt pattern.
Maybe a return trip to the parts store for a 460 clutch from the 80's is in order.
Don't know when they quit making 390's.

Look on your fan for a stamped ID number, post what it is. Example: D6TA-AA

390 & 460 use the same 7 bladed fans, with a fan clutch, the center hole is 2 5/8" diameter. However, there are two different fans, one is 19" diameter, t'other is 19 1/2" diameter.

1973/79 F100/350 460's use a unique fan clutch. 1974/76 F100/350 390's use the same fan clutch as 1977/79 F100/350 351M/400.

The fan clutch, if it's the original, will have an ID number stamped on it, similar to this: D4TA-BA or D5TA-CA

Was looking at the parts store's website and found that a 460 fan clutch has a clutch to fan bolt pattern ¼" larger than the 390 (3.25" compared to 3.00")
My fan/clutch bolt pattern is 3.25" so now I wonder if I have a 460 engine or 390.
Just bought the truck a month ago and just noticed the 'New Eng '90' sticker the other day.
I guess I can't go by the VIN info any more.

390 = 5 valve cover bolt holes / 460 = 7 valve cover bolt holes.

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code.

1968/76 F100/350 390 2V VIN engine code = H / 1974/76 F100/350 390 4V VIN engine code = M / 1973/79 F100/350 460 4V VIN engine code = J

Well, a 460 fan clutch from the parts store worked.
What a 460 fan is doing on a 390 is a mystery but hey, whatever is laying around the shop I guess.
Thanks for the help.

I bought a new fan blade and thermostatic clutch and it cured my problem. The fan clutch manufacturers are making them universal now so you may have to change it for that reason. I bought my fan at car quest
