clutch for fan

I have a 360 that has been rebuilt to a 390, with a regular stock metal fan. Everone tells me I should replace my regular fan with a electric one. But I have heard a lot of bad stories about electric fans. I have seen a clutch for a fan in the jegs catalog, that advertises 15 more hp. How does this clutch work?
And will it connect to my stock fan? Does it go in front of the fan or behind it.
With the clutch does the fan turn when the engine is cold? I tried to find some info in my shop manual. But it didn't show a clutch on the 1976 trucks.

clutch fans were used on trucks with AC the clutch is themostaticlly controled and will free wheel until under hood temps cause the clutch to lock the only time you really need a fan is low speeds stop an go traffic or a light at hi-way speeds enough air will flow through the radiator a good fan shroud is a must to correctly funnel the too you should be able to find a clutch fan in a bone yard the one one my 390 came off a 460

plowpusher, thanks for the info. I will look in the junk yards, the next time I get a chance. My truck has AC, but I guess when the rebuild was done, they removed the clutch fan.

I got a clutch fan from an '86 f150 all would be good but I already have a custom fan shroud and I went to put it on and it wouldn't fit without modification to my shroud so I put that project on hold. I got it for $5 in the bone yard, cleaned it up and it looks brand new. If you find one in a junkyard make sure you find one with a good (non blown out) seal.
