Swapping E4OD Trans

I have a 1996 E-Super Duty with a 460/E4OD in it. The trans shifts and works great. Has latest updates (for a E4OD) and great valve body setup. I am considering swapping in a Cummins 12valve Diesel and am trying to decide on the trans. I would like to re-use the E4OD in it now, but don't care for the conversion adapter setup. Calls for a lot of grinding for the starter clearance. I much prefer the available 6.8 V10 and the 6.0 diesel 4R100/5R110 adapters. Can I get a 1997 6.8 V10 E4OD case and transfer all the insides of my trans into it? Will the 6.0 converter fit in the case?
If this would work, it would give me the option to use a 4R100 or 5R110 replacement if I need to at a later date (I hear the 5R110 is a BEAR to program correctly).
I will be using the PCS trans controller.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Perhaps nobody has done this or even considered it. Plus you only asked a few days ago.

I would answer you, but you asked a question that I don't know the answer. I could guess, but I don't see that as being helpful.

I might be trying to give too much information that isn't needed. Maybe I should ask "Can I swap the case on my 460 E4OD to a case for a 6.8V10 E4OD or even a 4R100??"

since your asking i would guess,no.no you can't.
take your trans and the donor trans to a shop and let them handle the swap and upgrades for you.

I understood the question the first time. I don't know for sure, but I think it will work. I never attempted to do this. I know that you can put 4R100 internals into an E4OD case, I think it should work the other way.

Thanks Mark. The E4OD I have is in an E-Super Duty bus and has the emergency brake attached to the tailshaft. Doesn't look like a normal 2wd rear trans housing. Is it the same output shaft and tail housing as a 4wd trans?

because it "fits" doesn't mean it will hold up to a cummins.

if your capable of swapping trans internals (rebuilding transmissions etc) then go for it.
however your asking about swapping internals from an E40D that's coming from a gas engine application.
the 4R100 and the E40D are the same "basic" trans, however there are many, many, many internal parts that may be (and im fairly sure) much stronger with the internals that came in the diesel e40d/4r100 versions.
where your gas engine internal version just may (and probably wouldn't) hold up to your cummins engine.
there are better parts between the e4 and 4r (pro's and cons od each) that can also and should also be swapped/upgraded.

then you have a build up e40d.......for the gas engine application still.how do you know what if any of it has been built up to diesel spec?
this is why i strongly encourage you to either research all this yourself (it will take hours upon hours upon countless hours to learn it,source the correct parts and learn how to correctly swap/install them.)
i would seriously consider letting a reputable trans shop who is well versed and has all books on the parts and the knowledge and experience to handle doing what your asking........if you want a trans to hold up to your diesel.

i don't know.no.however i have a very good idea.
i know enough to know i would let a trans shop handle it for me.

Thanks for the replies.
I think I will take a different route. Today I procured a good 2006 5R110 transmission from a 6.0 diesel. I love those 5R110! I know that they are a PITA to program, but I think it will be worth the effort.
