F250 SD rebuilt back end
With the bed removed, I realized the frame and components under the bed were horribly corroded - to the point a lot of stuff had to be repaired or replaced. So I began disassembling the truck.
Once apart, the frame, axle, and components that could be salvaged were wired brushed clean, then metal etched and painted (I decided not to sandblast as the truck was inside my barn and I was concerned about sand getting into everything else). A lot of the disassembly required a torch - the rust was so bad that wrenches couldn't grab the bolt heads/nuts.
So, now the truck is back on the road - the frame and axle have two coats of POR-15 on them. The components (springs, shackles, shock absorber brackets, etc), have Eastman Rubberized Conversion coating on them.
The rust issue out here in central Connecticut appears to be due to a change from rock salt put down during the winter to a salt slurry. The rock salt hits the frame and maybe starts a pit, but the slurry sticks to the frame and starts eating away at it.
(As of now I can't post before and after pictures, but I will once I get permission)
