I have a 97 5.4 with 163,000 I need another engine, ever since the #8 plug decided to try and make an escape try from the head, after the repair 6months later no compression on #8 and no one wants to work on it they just want to replace it, so the question is is there any other engine swap possibility ie... 300,351,460. anybody have any info please let me know
First, what was done to repair the cylinder the first time?
There is a special procedure and tools to do the job. It's not a Helicoil job.
If a good seal cannot be obtained at the plug hole with a compression gauge there may not be any compression.
And no, the old motor designs won't bolt up or be able to use the PCM.
Best to be sure about the above before making a decision on what to do.
Good luck.
Thanks for the response. The shop that did the repair did the ford unofficial unrecognized repair. At first I thought it might have been the coil pack but the shop checked the compression and also did a leak down test.
I am wondering about how a cylinder seal was done for the leak down test if the plug threads are damaged?
The smallest leak at the plug hole will show as high leakage plus any leakage at valves and or ring seal.
If a seal was assured the leakage would be heard in the crank case, the exhaust pipe or the intake assuming the piston was near top center with both valves closed when the test was done..
Better to be sure about this otherwise the plug hole might still be repaired with the right procedure or the cylinder head replaced if the there is no other damage to the piston, rings or block, but the head.
Normally, a plug blow out does not do any internal damage unless something got back into the cylinder and crunched things.
Good luck with it.
