Cold Start Romping, followed by wandering idle.

Hi all, usually I hang around the 7.3 forum, but I've been thinking of moving to a newer truck, so I've started spending time around here as well.

I went to look at a truck today, 06 F350 6.0L Auto, 99k miles. When I started it up it cranked for five or six seconds before catching, ?gently? romping up to about 900 then settling down to what seemed normal. However after that it would wander between 500 and 1000 rpm, for the 30 or 40 seconds I left it running.

I popped the hood on it and it looked immaculate under there, too clean almost, it probably looked better than when it rolled off the line, I think they may be trying to hide a possible issue, as I see evidence of that elsewhere on the truck.

Anyhow, end of the story, does anyone know may be causing this starting/idling issue?

Hopefully within the next 3 or 4 days I can take it for a test drive, as it was late and the truck was blocked in tonight.

Thanks,

Baatzy

I would start by checking codes with a good reader and checking the icp sensor. Unplug it and see if there is oil in the connection and check koeo icp voltage. Should be between .18 and .24.

Thanks for the reply. How does Torque stack up as a code reader on the 6.0? I've only used it for my gauges on the 7.3. I have AE as well, but I need to download a bunch of software for school, so I don't know if it will be available.

Is the ICP sensor located towards the front of the driver side head as it is on the 7.3 or is it hiding somewhere else? I'm assuming the engine is an '06, same as the truck.

Thanks,

Baatzy

It's on the passenger valve cover up front. Right by the glow plug controller.

Thanks 78fordman, I appreciate your answers. Hopefully I can find time to make it over and look at the truck again tomorrow. I may have stumbled upon a good deal if this thing checks out good.

Thanks,

Baatzy

Couple of things you can check, unplug the EBP sensor while the idle is wandering and see if it goes away, if it does you may have a bad VGT valve or sticking turbo ( have seen cheezit suggest this ). I would also pull the oil fill cap and take note of how much blow-by you are getting, there shouldn't be anything noticeable coming out of the oil fill tube, if there is you have a loss of compression which is not good. Also check the FICM voltage it needs to be above 45 at all times from KOEO, cranking, idling and WOT, if it drops below 45 during any of these events the FICM needs to be repaired and the batteries and alternator need to be checked as low system voltage is the leading cause of FICM damage.

Well, I test drove the truck, it drives pretty nice, didn't seem to have any issues. I wasn't able to bring my OBDII adapter for the truck, my buddy was using it. However I did notice it seemed to have the same "romping" on startup, however I didn't see any signs of the wandering idle. I've got to do some more checking as far as finances go, but I think I am going to take it somewhere to have it looked at, I just don't know enough about these trucks to try and diagnose this stuff on a dealers lot.

Thanks for all the help, and anyone on here live in the Rapid City Area?
