Well, I have a '94 F150 XL 4x4 (w/33" tires and an K&N air filter) and I think I need lower gears, because when I try to accelerate on the highway I can't.
It's almost like she has nothing left. I try to pass people but find my foot going all the way to the floor, and there is still nothing. Offroad she doesn't work well either. It works sweet in 4x4 low, but other than that it's not good.
I also want alittle more grunt! I want to be thrown back in my seat when I punch it.
There is however some things I need, which is descent gas milage. I know right now I don't get any, but my buddy has 4:56 gears in his truck and it's really bad on gas!
What are my stock gears? Would 3.73's be good?
I don't need my truck to go like 180 KM/h, I only drive 90KM/H, but I'd like to have that kick when I go to pass.
There is a tag on the rear diff that will tell you what the ratio is. Most likely it's a 3.55. You'll want 4.10s for a good mix of gas mileage and power.
8.8 and you'll need some for the front end. I just did this, I got 4.10 ford racing gears (190 bucks), summit install kit ($80) for my 8.8. Then I got the Dana Spicer 4.09 gears for the front which already comes with an install kit for 188 bucks. Top end shouldn't change much. I don't know if you have an automatic or manual, but you'll be running about 2100 RPM at 70 mph in overdrive.

OK, you'd be at 2300ish with a 5 speed (thought you had an automatic). What's 95 KM/H....59-60 mph? AT 70 mph you'd be at 2300ish, at 60 mph you'd be at 2000. Doesn't sound like much, but your speedometer might be off as if you do the math with your current setup, it should read 1700 if you have 3.55s. Check the tag on the rear differential cover and see what gears you have.

That's the compromise - lots of towing torque, low end power but no acceleration or passing at 65. You floor it - and nothing. That's how my 460 works too, with 4.10.
Tons of acceleration and torque at low speeds. I think from the stop light it can outrace most cars - that is until it hits 35 mph.
