I have a 92 f150 with the 4.9L 4sp with 156K miles when its started cold its rough for about 5 seconds then clears right up sometimes it even dies out also started getting a high idle on occasion not all the time mostly after its warmed up in between gear changes , I know this has been covered before and I apologize for the repeat questions I have tried doing a search for 3 days and not having any luck between crappy computer and internet service it keeps timing out on me thanks for any suggestions on where to start
Mine is doing something similar, it cranks and sounds like only a few cylinders fire and it just stalls out, all the while the engine is rocking/shaking like ****.
If i straighten out the wheel (needs a new power steering gearbox) and cut the AC I can hit the gas a little and get it running fine. Then its smooth as can be, runs like a BMW in the showroom at 140K
Im going to change the fuel filter/oil/filter/plugs/wires/cap/rotor this weekend and give her some fresh coolant. That should smooth everything out. I hope.
I replaced a hose onto the vapor reservior thing down by the battery that was crimped shut from heat and being bent. Seems to have helped reduce the issue, but still happening nonetheless on occassion.
I don't have the answer either, and I'm seeing something similar, too. I just got through changing the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator, and am in the process of addressing an idle issue. However, it runs great until it warms up (then the idle issue takes over). Before this warm-up, when it's cold outside (recently in the 15-30 degree F range), it'll take three or four attempts before it'll catch and run.
I'm about to put on a new idle air control valve (IAC) in an attempt to fix my idle problem. If that fixes the cold start thing too, I'll let you know. If you figure it out, please let me know!
