Symptom: When I turn on the Ignition, there is a pump noise that constantly runs (passenger side, behind the battery). Someone told me that there is a vacuum leak. Is there a diagram showing the components of the vacuum pump? I want to start by replacing all hoses.
Any troubleshooting tips is much appreciated.
Other Side effects: Hard to start, no 4x4(I have not checked it recently).
Thanks Tugly, I actually found a similar diagram on line as well. But pardon my ignorance, I was not able locate the motor running behind the battery on the passenger side in the diagram.
i would like some idea where to start tracing a leak for my 4 wheel drive system. when i turn my switch inside to 4 wheel D the air goes to full defrost mode. what does this mean and where do i start.. thansk
typical vacume leak causes that winterkill,follow vacume hoses from front axle outer castings, up to vacume pump looking for broken fittings & damaged or rotten hoses,nice diagram above

It's a tee on the line, indicated by 14 on the diagram, but it's pretty easy to find in the truck - what with it making noise and all.

I used a Mity-Vac with a vacuum gauge (crucial tool on the 7.3L). Isolate one of the vacuum lines, hook it up to the Mity-Vac, and test its ability to hold a vacuum. Repeat as necessary. The leaks are usually the lines near the wheel, but I've had that PVH Solenoid on the passenger-side fender go bad as well.
