I need some help to make things go a bit more quickly for myself. I hear a squeak squeak squeak / creak creak creak consistent with engine rotation. Right ear is deaf so I don't have the sonic depth perception i used to take for granted!! I thought it was coming from the power steering pump but a curious mechanic working next door walked past my vehicle and said what year? sounds like a bad water pump! Is it typical of a water pump for the bearing to go bad or should I remove all the belts and wiggle everything around to see? How urgent is replacement? It's been making sounds for a month now at least. I have little time and a lot of work to do in preparation for cold weather and I have to prioritize these jobs according to urgency! Thanks guys.
It is impossible to tell from your description - but you have the right idea. Remove the belts and turn each pulley by hand. Could be an alternator bearing too.
I would say it's pretty important that you figure it out soon because if it fails, it will mostly likely be in the worse weather, and furthest from home, and out of cell range somewhere at night.
Generally ( BUT NOT ALWAYS) when the pump bearing begins to go you will have a trickle from the weep hole on the pump.
But by description i tend to agree with your friend. It could be another bearing. The water pump when turned by hand shout feel like a bicycle wheel or new roller skate wheel. Very smooth. If you feel any rough points or drag its probably time for a new one.
Pumps can squeak for 10 minutes or 10 months. They go when they go.
Belts themselves can squeak. So if you pull one and the noise goes away don't assume it is that bearing. Check alignment on the pulleys or for a bent pulley/shaft.
Thanks guys,
I've noticed the steering pump pulley shaft is definitely out of alignment it spins all crooked. I'll check things out further. I read that when an accessory begins to make noise, you should consider it a blessing that it gave you some warning before crapping out ha.
My 86 with the same powertrain does the same thing and has been for the year I've owned it...only at idle though. I've narrowed it down to coming from somewhere inside the engine side cover or the power steering pump. I've changed the belts so doubt its them. All else appears normal though ~Bill
The C2 pumps are notorious for groans and whines, which is part of the reason I'm going with a Saginaw. Anyway, some have reported that changing to synthetic fluid helps a lot.
Based on your description of the power steering pump pulley, I'd bet on it.
However, if the noise is more pronounced at idle and if it changes when the clutch is pressed in, it could be the harmonic balancer. As the rubber lining breaks down, the balancer slips. If in doubt, take a piece of chalk or grease pen and make a line from one side of the pulley to the other [engine off!!!]. Drive and then see if the line shifts.
Take your long screwdriver, 24" if not more, put the handle to your ear and touch each accessory, slowly and carefully engine will be running. You will know when you got the part that's making the noise, your brain will rattle. Please be careful spinning belts, pully's, and a fan can ruin your day, use two hands when going from one spot to another, one close to keep the handle to your ear the other to stabilize and hold screw driver to were you think the bearing would be located or were the noise is most prevaliant.
