Yeah, tint might help. I don't have tinted front windows though, maybe one day. As for the beastie boys, I don't mind them, but that's not where my user name came from, it's honestly just something I've used for the past 10ish years on different forums etc... Not sure of the origin, probably something I thought was cool in high school.
Well I bit the bullet and bought the mirrors in the first post, they were shipped fast and packaged well. Watched a few youtubes on how to remove the stupid door panel. Dumbest thing is Ford made 3 of the 4 screws different sizes in the door panel. The two access panels are easiest removed with a curved or L shaped pick and the mirror plug can be a bit of a PITA because there isn't much cord to work with.
All in all what I thought would be a few hours before I watched or read anything turned into just over half an hour for both of them. Real easy if you have the aforementioned picks an you'll need 6,7,8 and 11mm sockets I used a cordless impact to R&R. Bottom two screws are 6mm, door cup is 7mm and door handle is 8mm, mirrors are 11mm IIRC.
I think the puddle lamps are maybe the best thing about them, nice to see where you are stepping in the dark. I'll miss the auto dim but for just over $250 it was a good upgrade. The PO of my truck must have smacked the D. side mirror because it was always a bit loose and I had to put some velcro in the swing part to try and keep it still so that alone is nice to have fixed. My CVPI spit a spark plug last week so I'll probably haul it in with the F150 and see how I like the mirrors in a towing situation.
And yes the plug must be wired for everything as I didn't have puddles before and they work like a charm with the new ones. Would make sense it would be easier and cheaper to just run the same loom and plug to every mirror and have them work according to their own options.
If you are putting 09-14 mirrors on a 09-14 truck all features will work regardless of what your truck has stock. (The wire harnesses are all the same). Except heat (see my explanation above, you need the defrost button). Power fold is a different story. If your vehicle doesn't have that stock you will need to add the switches and wire it in.
I know this is true because I just upgraded to tow mirrors myself, and did a lot of research. All functions from my tow mirrors (came from a lariat, heated, power adjust, signals, puddle lights) worked on my XLT. There are many topics to back this up.
I looked into these mirrors for my '13 FX4. I was told I would not have the power fold feature on the Tow mirrors, unless I ran wiring to it. My FX4 does indeed have the power fold feature though for my regular mirrors. Is this true?
I don't need the switched telescoping feature, but folding is a must for me.
Ordered them as an anniversary present. The little lady drove my F-150 this week because I working on the Excursion and was all for it. I quote, "Yes... I hate those mirrors. I like the ones on my truck [the Excursion] much better."
Just wanted to give props for 1AAuto.com also- I have gotten some hard to find stuff from them like a filler tube for my 2000 Explorer- much less expensive than through Ford or even Rock Auto. Great stuff, great staff.
I usually dealt with Tony, but it's been a while, not sure if he is still there or not. I did notice that they are still adding to their How-To videos. Very cool.
I'm looking to go backward on mirrors, have towing now on our 2010, want to go back to stock smallies. Will have to see if they have them at A1.
