83 c6 problem

I recently acquired an 83 f350 with a 460 and c6 tranny. The truck looks awesome and runs great, supposedly the motor was rebuilt about 15k ago...but...When I put it in D it won't move and sounds like it's not fully engaging, kinda like a gnashing sound not quite grinding. R 2nd and L all work fine. If I put it in 2nd or L and start out then put it in D it shifts through and goes fine...until I get below maybe 15mph or stop then it slips and starts the gnashing sound. I checked and readjusted the linkage and the fluid level is good. Looks like the PO changed the fluid it's like new. I'm not a tranny guy so hoping someone here can help...

That doesn't sound good. I was going to say to replace the fluid, but it looks like the PO did it hoping to solve the problem. But since it didn't solve it I'm afraid the problems are serious - like 1st gear isn't fully engaging. However, you said you can put it in L and it does engage, and that confuses me. My understanding was that sitting still and placing the lever in D or L will do the same thing - cause the tranny to go into 1st. But placing the lever in 2 when sitting still will cause it to shift into 2nd. So I can see why placing the lever in 2 would get you going if 1st is failing. But I don't understand it working if you place it in L.

Later today I'll check the shop manual for diagnostics on the tranny and see what it suggests.

it may be worth the effort to disconnect the linkage at the transmission, then put the shifter in D (engine off) and go back under the truck and manually move the transmission shift selector to D (two clicks back from Park) and see if the linkage fits back exactly into the gear position selector lever.

Since it seems to be working okay in the other positions it is unlikely to be a linkage/adjustment issue, but it is an easy check and you might learn something else by feeling the movement of the selector arm.

CB - I'd rep you if I could. I just got through looking at all the diagnostic charts in the shop manual and in many cases they say the linkage may be improperly adjusted. So, that's a must.

Having said that, I don't find any condition in the diagnostics that match those being seen. It is almost as if it can't do what is being reported. So I'm thinking the shift lever adjustment may well be the issue.

So this would/could have a different outcome than going through the linkage adjustment procedure? I'll give it a try ASAP
Thanks!!

When I had a C6 in my truck, a transmission rebuilder told me that selecting '1' applies an additional band (or clutch?) that selecting 'D' doesn't, at a standing start.
He recommended doing this for boat ramps/heavy starts etc.

Whatever the problem, this may be the reason you are getting drive in 1st, but not in Drive, starting out.
