Can anyone explain what a phaser is and how it works I am told mine are noisy.

Cam phaser, fords version of variable valve timing. Uses engine oil pressure and electrical impulses to adjust valve timing. Over time using low quality oil/long oil change intervals can fill the small passage into these with deposits making them malfunction and become noisy.

 

It's those thingamajigs inside ye engine that blow to smithereens - when ye least expect it!

Just jestin' - I'm just wary of those years that have 'em. Hope yours are okay.

 

I have fixed one with a simple oil change and solenoids . Most are not that simple .....
