I don't remember anyone asking specifically for this, but since I have an engine on the stand I thought I'd take a picture of where the engine serial number can be found on the engine block. If you go to a parts counter at an International dealership, the first thing the usually ask is, "what's the engine serial number?"
"Why might I need to know this?", you may ask. Well, if you have the sticker on your valve cover with the serial number, and you're sure the valve cover came with the engine, you probably wouldn't need to know this.
If you aren't sure the S/N on the valve cover is correct, or you've removed the sticker and painted the valve covers all nice and pretty, the engine S/N can be found just behind the rear oil cooler mount, stamped in the iron.
Thank you Pikachu, I was actually wondering whether there was a way to check that label for "truthiness"! You are such a master of the arcane yet so useful information.

I have wondered if or where these motors were stamped. Is it stamped with date and serial# or just serial#? Can't read what it says in photo. Lucky for me I can still read the # on valve cover.
Thanks for posting info !!
Many trucks also have the last 7 or 8 digits of the VIN on that stamping pad as well. That will confirm the engine is original to the vehicle......kinda useful to know at times.
