I got a 1989 F150 302 with 110,000 miles. Already advanced the timing to 14 btc, installed a FIPK, and 3inch exhaust with a bullet muffler. Would a chip give me any more power??
A bit. I had a Hypertech in my 1993 F-150 302. And I paid $300 for it in 1994. It was a waste of money, IMO. It required 91+ octane gas to keep from pinging. Performance was only minimally better. I think it was worth 10hp and 15ft/lbs.
Today they are a bit better, but they still require 91+ octane gas.
I would look into other mods before this one. Gears, ignition system, etc. You will get as good or better results and start paying back yourself in mileage.
I put a super-chip in my '95 F-150 4x4 SC last year (~$250 from this sites on-line store), and it did help quite a bit. Getting up to speed on the freeway is much easier, and the shifts are firmer.
Having to run the higher octane fuel doesn't bother me too much, it only works out to around an extra $4 each time I fill up ... and the extra performance is worth it to me.
I don't know what gears you have, but I have 3:55 (with 31'' tires), and I am planning to go to 4:10's soon, so I guess that says that the chip didn't make me completely happy. I just don't think the 302 has the ***** to push that big truck along without lower gears, especially at highway speeds.
youll probably be disappointed with a chip. you dont have the mods to take advantage of one. unless you want to firm up the shifts and manipulate convertor lockup then spend your money elswhere. youllk probably see no more than a few hp across the board. trust me ive been down this road many times.
