What is the best way to get surface rust off of a shotgun? I recently acquired this gun from a relative who didnt take the preventative measures normally used. The gun fires fine and the wood parts are in good shape, there is just a lot of surface rust on the barrel and receiver. Any help would be great......
Thanks....

A lot of rust may be a problem. Usually for light surface rust some very fine steel wool and maybe some WD40 applied gently will usually do the trick. Unless this is a collector's piece, you could use some blue touch up and then grease the gun as required.
...It really depends on what you mean by LIGHT surface rust.
If it is just slightly more than discolored, used a bronze brush and lightly scrub it off...WD-40 works fine on this sort of thing...You'll be surprized at how well this will work on even heavier rust deposits...
...I stay away from steel wool on my guns...steel wool rusts too...
use bronze wool instead.
...Once cleaned up wipe down with a Butchers grade silicon lubricant...the stuff they use for their meat slicers etc etc...the stuff is AWESOME for firearms.
DO NOT reblue any collectors grade gun...It WILL reduce the value
Thanks yall, this is not a collector gun. It is a remington 870. The rust hasnt pitted yet or anything so I am hoping that I will be able to get it off. I will try your suggestions.
I agree, CLP! Put a liberal(I hate that word) coat on and let it sit for an hour or so. I would use a soft bristled brush and while watching tv scrub away. It will take a while, but you run less of a risk taking off any of the finish that's still good. Once done keep a little CLP coated on it to prevent further rusting.
CLP for sure is great use on all my firearms does your 870 have smooth finish on barrel or rough peak&valley finish which is more prone to lite surface rust like said by others lot CLP soak at times a nylon brush will do it go from there been there done that
