I have a 2004 F150 with a 5.4L with a little over 100,000 miles. And the engine knocks like it about 1 1/2 quarts low on oil! I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I'd like to know how to get this fixed.
I've actually had 2 different people ask how I got a diesel engine in a 1/2 ton truck!
Is it a knock, like a rod bearing or is it the cam phaser's slamming around? listen with a long screwdriver put the handle to your ear and listen in front of valve covers, and you can do the same to the side of the block thru the wheel wells. Please becarefull, you got a fan and a long serp belt spinning in there. I dont want to hear the screwdriver spun on the waterpump pulley and went into my eye. OK?
I also have an '04 5.4 that rattles/knocks like a diesel. Sounds like it's coming from valve covers on both sides. 78k miles....and I don't like the noise
It sounds like you guys have a cam phaser issue. Take a look at Livernois Motorsports. They sell a cam phaser lockout kit for this exact issue. As a matter of fact do an advanced search on this site for cam phasers. Another member here installed a set of these and other timing related issue to his truck. He even provided and excellent write up with detailed pics. of what to do.
Yes can completely destroy the engine. Keep in mind that these are what's known as interference engines. Meaning that if the engine were to jump or miss time the valves will interfere and contact the pistons. Leaving total carnage in it's wake. I really think you should(if you haven't already) read the thread started by blueovalandy titled Cam Phaser Lockout Installed and Running Very Quiet. It's very informative and very detailed. He also corrects other issues with the timing chain guides. And what to look for. It should answer the rest of your questions.
