Hi all. I'm migrating from vwvortex (brought my flame suit) in hopes to do some maintenance on my LD250. So far I've done front hubs/bearings, pads rotors, tie rod ends, drivers manifold/gasket. My gas tank is now leaking, so its time to put a new one in. It currently has a 30 gallon tank, my question is, can I put in a smaller one; either 19 or 24 gallon? My biggest concerns are the sensors, and strap locations. does anyone have insight on this?
I have searched different suppliers, and they list smaller tanks.
I would be real careful looking at parts for your truck, as it is a 1997 LD F-250. Parts mfg. and distributors can have mistakes in their look-up tables, like mixing in 1997 F-250 (old style) parts with it.
One link you have there is for a 16 gallon tank... looks totally wrong. I doubt a 16 gallon tank was ever under an F-series truck in a one-tank system. How far could somebody go on a 16 gallon tank? That's like for a car or mini-truck, or maybe one tank of a dual-tank setup of previous years.
The other link is a possibility, 30 gallons. Measure and look at yours to check and be sure.
I would keep looking too... at rockauto.com they list tanks made by Sherman (I have no details on them, you could look for their website) for your truck, and what is nice they list the cab/bed and wheelbase configurations in the tank descriptions. So with the correct WB length for your truck, a better chance of getting the correct tank that fits.
My 1997 F-150 SC/LB has a 157" wheelbase, 30 gallon.
A SC/SB is 139" WB takes a 25 gallon tank.
A RC/LB is 139" WB takes a 30 gallon tank.
A RC/SB is 121" WB, takes a 25 gallon tank.
This is just to give you some grasp for it in the 1997 F-150, of which the 1997 250 LD is based on.
The old-style truck design has totally different WB lengths, so that can be a check between proper and wrong.
small update. I bought a 30 gallon tank, and new straps from Autoparts Warehouse. Came to $200, and some change shipped to my door. Not bad. I am going to undercoat the tank-heavily at the seams, and where the straps go, prior to installation. I am also getting my passengers side manifold done...then, bring on the snow...
ok, Tank is in. I of course, broke the pressure sensor, but I got a new one cheap. I hooked everything back up, put 5-ish gallons of fuel in the tank, but all it does is crank and crank. Will not turn over. I understand the fuel lines need to fill, but 10+ minutes of cranking, with no start? did I skip a step? Please help...
update, went out this morning, turned the key, and she popped right off. I'm not going to try and analyze why it didnt start before, I dont care really. It starts now, every time. I drove it to the nearest filling station, and put $30 in. gauge moved, so I know the sending unit is working. now on to the Passengers side exhaust manifold...
