Bought a 04 ex 5.4 2wd from a guy in the parking lot of Walmart. He just walked up to me and asked if I needed another ex. I was in my first ex that I bought in late june of 2014, a one owner 05 ex 6.0 2wd out of FL. At first I said no but he was insistent that I buy it. So a $1000 later i had another ex. Ok he said it needed an engine. It ran rough but, I drove it back to my work and parked it. My mechanic said it was not blown. So 2 coil ignitions and 2 o2 sensors later. We cranked it today. Ran perfect for 10 minutes, then back to running rough. Pulled the spark plugs of those 2 cylinders. They were fouled and coated with oil. Any ideas?
...what did he test to back that up? Did he do a compression test on all cylinders? If he's good he'd have written down the psi on each to prove he did the work thoroughly.

Bad rings letting oil blow by? I would think if the rings were bad oil could get in - but you would also see decreased compression on those pistons. Enough to say 'blown' vs. 'not blown'? No idea. If he had the numbers on the compression test, does the oiled cylinders match lower numbers on the compression test?
Are there any areas where a seal could allow oil to get in via the intake? (I honestly don't know all the oil channels in the sleeves/block, so that might be a crazy idea)
I would not waste my swap time putting in a v10. Not enough of good change. The 5.4 is adequate in all ways. Not hot rod, but fine. I like my 5.4 in my 4wd ex. With 4.10 gears it rolls quite nicely. And decent mileage.
I'd swap in a 12v cummins 6Bt if my engine was toast. Something mechanical.
