Compression Test

Has anyone here done a compression test for these engines? Specifically the 5.4

Any advice?

Plan on it taking most of the day and perhaps change the plugs while you have them out, just so you don't have to do it again anytime in the near future.

Unless you trade your truck in and it gets evaluated by a dealer, nobody checks compression much anymore on new vehicles
1996 and newer with misfire monitor is the reason
Same with scopes, nobody uses them anymore
That said, if you suspect a problem or have a miss, a compression test is vital
5.4s are just downright bitchy to get the plugs out
Agree with the above, replace the plugs with new Motorcraft ones while you're in there

It won't hurt to have a Cal-Van kit just in case!

I have one of the Amazon knockoff kits. I did not see the difference between it and the real thing other than the price tag. It worked great for the plug the previous owner trashed.

120-140 psi is the spec for your 5.4
To pass the test, the lowest cylinder should be within 75 percent of the highest

I've been using this Proto since about 1980 I bought it used for 20 bucks
Cracked the plastic a few years back
I had to buy another adapter hose to do the longer reach ones like the 4.6 and your 5.4
They take special Schrader valves you get off a tool truck
