5.4 engine is smokeing something awful. sometimes up to 2 1/2 quarts a day. There are no leaks it just burns it. Also the oil sometimes smells like gas. The boss man won't replace it till it bows. Any suggestions on what to do? Tried using Lucas but it doesn't even work anymore.
only way to tell for sure is to do all the tests. Compression and leakdown tests will tell you where the problem is.
General compression test: tell how well the rings are seating and what cylinders are low, if any.
Compression test w/adding oil to see if the compression rises will tell if its a lower end problem; ie ring failure (which I would suspect, that is a lot of oil)
Leakdown test can tell if there are some problems with the heads.
2 1/2 quarts a day is a lot and to me that qualifies as a blown engine; something seriously is wrong and depending on what could make it into a catastrophic failue.
I'd say that you should stop putting oil in it and drive it like you stole it until she blows!! That could be a good time! Of course this is the opposite of helpping you fix the issue...
hey my 2001 f150 is doeing the same thing smokes like a train at start up.useing alot of oil.ford dealer of no help so iam trying to find someone to do compression test.
Back in the day we put a little fine sawdust in the oil - helped keep the cops from pulling us over - till we could get to the shop and drop the motor. Not sure if it was the sawdust or just stupid luck - I bet on the stuipd luck. Never do this with a modern engine with the tight tolerences today.

I heard my pops say they used to put sawdust in the oil to keep it from knocking while they were trying to sell a car. He also said never to do that to a car you liked! I guess in this case, since the truck is smokin' like teenager in the bathroom, it might be interesting to see what would happen...
