I saw a 03 MACH1 Mustang at the dealer last night. Wow! It had the shaker hood, the stripes on the side and spoilers on the front and rear just like the good old days. Right next to it was a 03 Cobra. Life is full of hard choices. Then there was the trucks. As for the mustangs, it made me want to go home and start working on mine.
Last year, I saw a new Mustang get involved with a Dodge truck, at less that 50mph impact. The truck had a slight bend in the front bumper, with the grill pushed a little, and a little springing in the hood lip.
The Mustang had the engine in and under the cab, the driver was trapped by the floor hitting the dash, the entire front end was destroyed, and the body bowed outward. As I said, the total impact speed was at most 50 mph, both vehicles starting from opposing sides of a stop light, and meeting in the middle. I was stopped on the divided highway they were trying to cross, and saw the whole thing.
Because of this, I am no longer a fan of the Mustang, unless of course, it was built more than 20 years ago.
Why's that the fault of a mustang's design? That's just plain physics. That would happen with ANY car, not just a mustang. Cars are designed to crumple in an accident to absorb the shock. I got hit by a monte carlo (pics in my gallery) and look at his car.
The new Mach I is pretty neat, 305hp and a better tuned suspension works for me!
I think the '03 Mach 1 is a great tribute to the classic. It seems that now since the Camaro and Firebird is gone, Ford's thinking about horsepower again. The Cobra does have a supercharger now. Where were these ideas a few years ago when a stock V8 camaro was beating up on our Mustangs? Anyway, the new Mach does look nice. I do think the hood needs the full black-out treatment, not just a little stripe. And the one I was looking at had a price of $34,000 U.S. That's enough money for a very nicely restored '69 Mach 1 428SCJ. And that my friends would be the easiest decision of my life!
Ford is involved with a heritage series for the Mustang. That's how the new Mach 1 came about in the first place. Of course to be a series, there has to be more than one, meaning, more than one model. We now have the Mach 1 back, I can see a Boss Mustang in the future. Maybe even a Shelby model. Carroll Shelby owes a lot of what he has today to the Mustang, and the Mustang owes Shelby, so why can't they get together again? I'd certainly buy one! The Bullitt Mustang however is not classified into this Heritage Series due to the fact that the original Bullitt was actually a movie production car and not factory.
By the way, does anybody know of a vintage Boss 302 Mustang SCCA Trans-Am race car for sale?
These Mustangs roll out are there to entice you in spending money. C'mon $29,000+ for a Mustang? $36,000+ for a Cobra. It's bail out money for Ford. Sure I'd like one but I don't want to take the hit in the wallet when I drive it off the lot. Now a Saleen.......
Mike W tell me about your Mach 1.
I'm sorta looking at one right now.
It's a Q code (no shaker) 428Cj with a 4 speed, black interior.
It's all stock and complete other than the carb, headers and wheels.
It's getting pretty rusty and needs a complete resto. It hasnt been moved in probably 15 years now.
About 20 years ago I had a 69 Mach with a 390 in it. It was a 100 foot car but i still wish I would have kept it instead of just seeing the dollar signs. Oh well.
A month ago at work we sold a new Mach 1 in red. It looked ok but I think I like the blue better, in pictures anyway.
It almost had the old look but I could see it with slats on the back window and maybe different wheels to finish off the look.
I bought my 65 GT couple new for $3200, still got it. Also got the 69 Mach and a 69 coupe.
I wish you could buy a new car that was as simple to keep running as the 65. No power anything, tough 4-speed. 289 that got up to 20 mpg. Only had two failures in 135,000 miles. One was a cracked Mallory coil and the other was a broken retainer clip on the shifter linkage.
