can anyone tell me the best way to time a inline 300 4.9 when the #1 piston is at tdc what should the valve position be. are there 2 different valve positions when the #1 piston is at top of cylinder?
You will want it to fire slightly before TDC on the top of the
compression stroke. At the top of the compression stroke,
both valves will be closed. At the top of the exhaust stroke,
both valves will be open.
You can tell if you are on TDC by putting your finger in the spark plug hole in #1 and bump the starter. When you feel compression you are on the compression stroke.
Watch your timing pointer and bump the starter until the timing pointer is at "0" (or very close to it).
Loosen the distribuor and rotate the body until the rotar is pointing to #1 wire. Snug down the distributor. This will be close enough to get you started.
Start the engine and set the timing with a timing light to the specs for the model year you have.
If you are having problems starting, move the distributor body slightly clockwise or counterclockwise while cranking the engine.
