Unhappy Need Help with Codes & Gas Problem

Ok. Been having problems with my 86 ranger (2.9L V6), so I finally went to AutoZone and bought a code scanner ($30.00 not bad) I wanted to take it there and put it on their computer but it is a 45 minute drive and was afraid I would not make it there. Anyway I got the codes but it seems odd that all of my sensors could be bad, but I guess it could be possible. Here are the codes 14, 23, 31, 37 (37 not listed in book), 72, and 54. The scanner spits out the codes 2 times. The second time I did not get code 14, but got the rest. I looked up the codes and it is alot of sensors saying that is bad. Could there be one major problem that it could be having causing most of the sensors to have problems?

Also seems like it is going through alot of gas. I am just hoping that the gauge is malfunctioning because the other day it had half a tank and tonight after letting it warm up and stuff the needle is almost on Empty. I crawled under the truck while it was running looked at all gas line and looked really close at the connections and there was no leaks. The person before me said after he changed the fuel pump (high pressure) that it screwed up the Fuel Pressure Regulator and he had to change it I changed the high pressure fuel pump in the summer (found out it was a wire on the fuel shutoff switch) anyway wondering if that is acting up and letting too much fuel in? Or could it be bad gas because my car (2005 focus) has been running funny like a gas problem also.

This thing is driving me nuts I need to get it in good running condition for winter. Any help would be appreciated.

which codes are KOEO, which are in continuous memory, and which are KOER?
the fuel problem could be linked to the codes.
ken00 has pinpoint tests that zero in on problems, he can hook you up with those.
if possible, reset the battery and test again or just pull the codes again to make sure you got the correct codes since 37 isn't in the book and 14 is questionable.

The codes were a result from the KOER test. According to the tests the KOEO test was ok.

Also wanted to mention that it seems that all of this starting happening about 2 weeks after changing the O2 sensor but none of the codes point to the O2 sensor so it must be functioning OK. Also the exhaust coming out of truck smells really bad like it is burning alot of gas no smoke just alot of odor. So these sensor malfunctions must be giving the engine too much fuel?

they couldnt all be from the koer test; codes 14 and 54 are koeo/continuous codes, codes 23, 31, and 54 are koer/continuous and/or koer codes, and 72 is a koer code, code 37 ????
pull the codes again just to make sure.

have you checked the fuel pressure and the fuel pressure regulator?

I found code 37. It said gas running rich at idle. I took the codes to AutoZone and they said it sounded like my EGR valve and MAP sensor went bad causing everything to act funny. So I got a new EGR valve and MAP sensor along with new plugs. Since the truck is 18 years old I don't think any sensors or the EGR valve has been changed so the guy said it wouldn't hurt to change them anyway. I am thinking about the fuel pressure regulator also since the guy before me said he changed it after he changed the high pressure pump because it screwed up and fouled out the plugs and I changed the high pressure pump in the summer. But I will change these parts and see what happens. Hopefully they were right. I will keep everyone posted.

Well finally got to change the EGR valve tonight. Boy I was surprised. I don't think the other one has ever been changed. One of the connectors for the vacuum lines I had to take off the old one and put on the new one was plugged up tight with black gunk. I had to take a drill bit and gradually turn and hit it through to clean it out, so I think that was the whole problem and the inside is caked with black gunk, also it smelled like my exhaust before I changed it.

Also changed MAP sensor, none of my books says anything about it but one of the vacuum line hooks up to it so I am going to see what that does. Other than that, I took to fill it up with gas. It ran fine it is idling better and the exhaust coming out does not smell bad like it did. I think that fixed it, I am going to change plugs also just in case it might have screwed them up. Going to take it to work and see what gas mileage looks like. Will let you guys know.
