SO my water seperator light comes on and will not reset. Igo and have a new sensor installed. It happens again and they replace parts on the seperator. Week later again. This time they say I got dirty fuel somewhere and they show me the fuel pump is full of some type of gunk. Neet new fuel rail, drop and drain tank and clean entire fuel system. First two items totalled about $700 this is an additional $850 plus or minus.
I am not doubting their assesment of the crap in the fuel but I guess what I don't understand is how does this get through 2 $40 dollar filters? Yes I do change them religiously and try to get my fuel from reputable stations. I just don't know how much longer I can afford this affair between the mechanic and my truck!
I replace the filter 2x a year. The truck only has 55k miles so they get changed about every 5k or so. As for identifying the fuel station, I just got back from a trip to Myrtle Beach which is about 600 miles each way plus the 2 or 3 tanks of fuel I purchased there. To identify a station as the one with bad fuel would be impossible to prove.
I have owned diesels since the 70's and worked with them since then too. I remember one of the first things I was told is a diesel only needs two things to run, clean fuel and clean air. That has stuck with me and I do make as sure as possible to provide that. I know todays engines are much more complex that they use to be but I still don't know why when I change the filters there was no clue of an issue (the filter almost look new), and how did all this crap get past them?????
I forgot to answer the second part. I drain the seperator about every month and I keep what I drain and let settle for several hours and then look for any signs of water. Never have seen any. I don't think water is my issue it is just some crap.
I don't get it man... maybe you have really bad luck.. or got one of the "bad ones" was the truck running good throughout this whole time?? It's hard 2 believe that your changing them every 5k and still having issues! I change my filters every 10k also run diesel kleen every fill up(whether it helps or not) haven't had an issue yet... water separator monthly....like you said only fuel up at reputable places. I know my buddies are bad about running there tanks waaaayyy down there not saying you did but a possibility for more **** to float around or become a problem.
Yep truck runs fine but the milage did go down some after they started fixin it. I don't use any additives to the fuel (maybe I should). I will pleed guilty that on occassion I did run it down to slightly below a 1/4 tank but that was the exception not the rule. I think I hit the bad juju this time!!!!

I think you might have bought some bio fuel and since you do not drive alot you got the nasty fngi. I got it in my 7.3 but I run used cooking oil in it and I let it set for a couple months. There is a fungi killer I use in all of my trucks now. I buy it at Oreilly auto it is called killem if they just cleaned the tank it will grow back. With this you do not need to remove the tank just add to the fuel in a few days it will pass. You may have to change fuel filter a few times till it all leaves. When I got it it looks like snot in the lines and filters in the tank it looked like a forrest was growing.
