94 F250-7.3 IDI factory turbo. I changed injector pump, injectors, glow plugs, air intake and exhaust and added gauges about 2 years ago. Slowly it seemed like one cylinder was not firing quite right. There was small seepage of fuel on top in assorted places and I wanted to tighten and clean it up. When I took out the #3 injector it released extremely hard and came apart when when taking it out. It appears the space below the injector threads was packed full of ? carbon? This all appears above the lower portion of the injector which is still in there. The stuff crumbled when scraped. What is the best way to get out the lower portion of the injector. What could be the cause of this?
Take an old injector and grind the large threads off. Now you can screw it into the piece stuck in the head and pull. I welded a loop on mine so I had a good way to get a hold of it...
That's what I thought. What do you think is the cause of the Carbon in this space? It's like the bottom the injector was not seated against the bottom of the injector space and the carbon from ignition just packed in there over time.
Usually a carbon build up like that is from the injector not seating correctly, this can be caused by several things, if new injectors were put in and the old copper crush washers were reused they wont seal properly or the old copper washer was left in the head when the new injector was put in or there is no washer at all.
You need to soak it with something that breaks down carbon and remove the injector, if gasses have been blowing by the seat and injector joint youll have to get a seat cutter to cut a new non eroded seat into the head or youll have the same low power leaking hole again.
