I heard of some stuff called "Chigger Chaser" when I was home one time, but never found it. It's supposed to do the job, but I bet it contains one or more of the above.
My money is on the down home methods posted here.
Besides - when I'm home, that'll be the day when I don't smell like oil and gasoline anyway...
Working for the telephone company in rural Mo means that chiggers are something I face everyday. So far the best repellant I have found is a flea and tick collar around each ankle while working in tick and chigger infested areas.
Once they've got you, use Chig-a-Rid. It's medicated and dries to form a layer over the bite, which helps keep it from getting irritated. Similar to the nail polish remedy, but actually made for the purpose.

Hm, I got hit by well over a hundred of them this weekend. EVERYWHERE.. all around my waste, my ankles are just one big red bulge now, my back has a few dozen......my butt and other 'unmentionable' areas. This is ridiculous, been 4 days, and no luck. Still as itchy as ever, and I have tried almost everyone of these remedies AT LEAST once.....I am about to try some experentation beforeI go to bed, gonna use 72s trick...hope it works..
and yes, I know this thread is almsot a year old.....so what?
ugh..I never had to deal with those things 'till I went to Kentucky. What a horrible, horrible thing they are.
'Course anything that bites, burrows, digs chews, or otherwise discombobulates and consumes flesh is pretty gross.
Good luck gett'n 'em out. They'll stick in there for quite a while. Lotsa stuff that seals the little buggers in should help. Vasaline is easy to clean off and pretty cheap.
Yup, tried benadril for about 36 hours....no workie. the chigger-ex stops the itching for all of 3 hours max. seeing as how work last 9 hours......yeah that does nt work to well. The rubbing alcohol works until they get aggrivated, so can sleep with jsut that, the nail polish helps out a bit, normally gets me through the last half of work with only 3 or 4 itching horribly....they seem to have lessened a bit it appearance over the course of the morning while I slept, so I just put on some rubbing alcohol on them rightnow, see how it goes after I go back to bed later tonight.
Back in the old days the South Florida pioneers would use Pine Turpentine on chiggers. When I grew up that had given away to acetone. Yes, acetone. I suppose that is the good stuff in the nail polish remover that makes it work and it does a number on chiggers. You also might check to make sure you are not suffering hives or such. After they leave you try soothing the area with Wich Hazel.
Hmmm, I didn't get many last weekend, only 18 bites, but nail polish and benadryl worked just fine for me, always has, even with 50+ bites. But then I have seen people go ape over a couple of mosquito bites.
