Points keep burning up

okay so i have a 1977 f250 with the stock 400. the truck has been switched over to points from the original electronic ignition. so i have put 1500 miles on the truck and burnt through 3 sets of points and condensors already. what might cause this? the coil is getting 12-13 volts all the time but the coil is a "non external resistor required". any ideas? Also, i have been thinking of switching over to an aftermarket electronic ignition. Possible pertronix ignitor 2. Has anybody tried this? thanks, dave!

The high voltage going to the coil is what's doing it. 12-13-14 volts is way too much for points.

Put in a resistor or go to a pertronix unit.

Yes a resistor is need. I put an Accel version of the Pertronix in and love it! My timing was jumping around and now it is stead as can be and it was less than $100 bucks.

Agree with the others; despite what your coil may be rated to handle, stock points are not rated for full voltage. Other things that can burn through points are too fine of gap, misalignment, or a bad condenser, but a bad condenser is usually accompanied by strong misfire.

What gap are you running?

The truck should already have a resistor, this:

D7AZ-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-213).

49" long / Color coded red / 1.30-1.40 ohms resistance / #16 gauge wire.

1977/89 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline.

If his truck had electronic ignition on it would it still have resistor wire on it?

Yes, there is still a resistor circuit.

Absolutely!
DuraSpark electronic ignition introduced in 1974, but not all vehicles had it until 1976.

The resistor wire I posted was introduced in 1977.

Maybe the PO removed it for the new ignition system, He had the opposite problem, not enough voltage to the module or coil and cutout the resistor wire.

While the part number may have changed to accommodate different wire lengths or terminations, both points and Duraspark use a ballast resistor as Mike points out.

You should be able to just add in a resister out next to the coil i would think, the experts here can tell you for sure.
