Parking Cable Replacement '93 E150 Van

I searched previous posts for info on changing the parking brake cable on my '93 E150 and even with backing off the brake shoes all the way I still cannot get enough slack to hook up the cables. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Which part are you reconnecting first/last? I would disconnect from everything, connect at the brake drum first, then connect to the splicer in the cable.

I'll try that sequence. Thanks.

How did it go? I have a similar problem with my F-150 and there is nowhere near enough slack to hook everything up.

Haven't tried it yet. I'll post results sometime Friday, probably in the PM.

Make sure you have the correct cable. The left and right sides are different lengths. I don't remember any particularly difficulty when I changed mine.

Winford,

Did your vehicle come with an adjustor midships? I know mine did not (92 F-150) and I am fairly certain that the 93 wouldn't have either.

I replaced both parking brake cables from the frame mounted bracket back to the wheels. However, in front of the frame mounted bracket there is a 2 to 1 connector (the cable from your e-brake pedal that connects to the two individual wheel cables. It is not adjustable. This connector takes the place of the older adjustable connector.

The problem is that it appears the everything needs to be perfect tension to connect properly. Too much slack and the e-brake will not engage. To much tension and the parking brake is solidly locked on.

That is the problem I am facing.

I replaced a cable on my 92 F150, and it was as you indicate, a 2 to 1 connector - non-adjustable. I also remember replacing the pedal assembly because it failed. In neither case did I have a particularly difficult problem. Seems I remember having to use a pair of vise-grips to grip the cable and pull it enough to get it in the connector. But it was not too tight after connected. This is a puzzle. Have you compared the old and new cables to see if they are different? Also, was the old cable working and failed, or never worked since you had the vehicle?

I sold the 92 to finalize my 54 F100, but have since bought an 88 F150. I will look at when I can to see if it jogs any memory. Also, I will check out my service manual to see what other info may be available.

I first replaced the two rear brake cables. One had rusted so the e-brake was constantly engaged. I thought that while I was at it I would do both. They seemed to the same length as the old ones I took out. However, they might have relaxed and fooled me. At any rate I have thrown them away.

I was working with my uncle who is a pretty good wrench head. We we well short of connecting up with the intermediate cable. The two of us were using a pry bar to find some slack. No way. It seemed a good inch or so short. We still hadn't gotten the 2 to 1 close to the intermediate brake cable and the parking brake was obviously being engaged.

Next step, I thought that perhaps a previous owner had jacked around with the intermediate cable to take out some slack. I went and bought a new intermediate cable and it was at least 4 inches too long.

Currently I am dreaming and scheming up a way to use an eye bolt and some wire clamps to make the thing work.

Tried again to hook up the cable with no success. Ended up using some extra cable and cable clamps for a shade tree fix. I'm guessing that if I remove the rear drums then maybe I could get enough slack to install the cable properly, but this will do for a while. A simple adjuster where the splice/joint is would sure ease the installation.
