I've been running Brian's tunes for a few months now. I love the way the truck runs with them - though 90% of the time I'm driving around in the "low hp tow" tune. It seems to be the quietest, and provide shifting that works for my drive style.
Unfortunately, if I lean on the go-pedal to heavily (read: more than 1/2 throttle) to merge, or make a sudden lane change, I get way more smoke than I want. Enough to make me reconsider running a factory tune. (The "higher hp tunes" are much worse).
I'm planning on replacing the 6637 with a new element - or maybe even going back to the stock set-up for noise cancellation. What else can I look at to help reduce smoke output?
You might have your tune adjusted. I have my tunes set to react to the MAP signal. If I don't see XYZ boost, it curtails the fuel to ZYX. This makes for a lousy race tune, but it's an excellent DD with good manners. Altitude also plays a factor (for those like me who radically change altitude in a single drive). The tune uses a different fueling strategy, depending on the BARO.
Reason I ask is to see whether you are experiencing boost leaks......smoke is usually related (and someone with more of a clue can correct me) to a rich mixture so you have more fuel than your level of air intake can support cleanly.
I would look for boost leaks first, then check the turbo condition etc.
any other mods besides the chip & 6637 air intake? Stock turbo? Exhaust?
Sorry about that...
Just the basics for me; Tank mods w/ pre-pump Baldwin, 4" TB w/muffler, 6637, capped red line, AIH delete, coolant filter & gauges (including FP).

Hmmm, I wonder if the MAP based fueling is something Brian gets into? I assume he's just 'dragging and dropping' the files - without much "customization" applied.

Was it always like this?
Boost and EGTs seem to be appropriate for the load. Nothing out of the ordinary.
With a stock tune, it's fine. Little, to no smoke. The more aggressive the tune, the more smoke it produces. I understand that can be a result of too much fueling/inadequate air intake, but other vendor's tunes have produced less smoke.
I'll try to put some time aside and recheck for boost leaks anyhow.

Sounds like we're all thinking about it right then; if there is no obvious signs of the usual suspects and other tunes have been better, then it must be the fueling strategy etc. of the tunes.....unless there is something else I'm missing....
