New Truck

Going to be in market soon for a newer truck. Definitely going to be a F350 Crew Cab 4X4 SRW with under 100k on the odometer. I want good honest advice, opinions, feedback about what year and motor to get. Should I get a 2008-2010 with the 6.4? Or spend a few more bucks and get a 2011 to about a 2013 with the 6.7? Would like to stay under 30 grand but would go to the mid to upper 30’s for a 2011 or newer. I do plan on doing the deletes/ bulletproofing and having it tuned. Which motor/trans combination is the best, most powerful, durable, and reliable with those mods?

I had the 2008 with the 6.4, traded it for the 6.7. I had to have the radiator replaced in my 6.4 but otherwise it was trouble free but it sucked fuel like no other. The 6.7 is very powerful stock and I am very impressed with the 6 speed transmission.

I don't have mine tuned, and I don't plan on it either, so no feedback with that; but stock this truck is awesome.

tuning nowadays only gets u power. not much mileage.1mpg maybe.

the gearing makes the SRW's pretty even. 3.55 with 20in wheels or 3.31 with 18's. lift it and you lose mileage. but might have more fun? (not for me)

so far there have only been a couple problems.. on the earlys (2011) a small number of trucks drop a valve, very early a few turbo bearings. Not much so far on bulletproofing.

more front suspension continues to wear out faster than expected, get some wobble, bounce.. and the been there since the 7.3 days rear end bounce at 40-45mph.. on a set of trucks.. didn't have it on 2 of mine, mild case on my dually which max tire pressure seems to solve for me (not others).

To the OP, go with the 6.7 you won't be disappointed. Ford really got it right and feels like it's the new "7.3" in terms of reliability and awesomeness. The couple of problems are radiator seams(on both the 6.4 and 6.7) and EGR sensors if you don't do the deletes on the truck. Let us know and post up a pic of the truck brother!

I had an 08 6.4 as well. You will be hard pressed to find one of those with low miles at this point.

6.7 has second generation of the dpf emissions. So it is more efficient.

I didn't own a 6.4, but I did work on and maintain my county's MED units which had 4 6.4s. Two of which we ended up deleting and the MPG went from 12 to 15 overall, and stopped the money pit that begins with EGR valve's getting clogged, etc and so forth.

Also the thing about deleting the 6.7, there is a lot more benefit then the 6.4. The 6.4 doesn't have DEF, the 6.7 does. You are saving at least the $25 bucks every 5000 miles or less depending on how you drive.

So lets say that you drive on average 10k a year. Diesel costs lets say $4.00 a gallon, I feel like thats a good round number. At 13 MPG overall your annual costs are FUEL alone are $3,077 approximately. If you do the delete and gain even 2 mpg, your fuel costs go down to $2,667. Thats a $410 savings per year on JUST fuel. In 5 years of ownership, you will have paid off your tuner(assuming 2k for the tuner) and in another year will pay off the straight pipe and EGR delete.

Also we go into the realm of making the truck more reliable for the long term. While the vast majority of these trucks haven't been to the 250k mark yet, I assume they will make it. What I don't know that will make it is the whole DPF system. Let us know how you make out.

no problem.. I appreciate the info. different from my experience, but I haven't tried tune on the 6.7. I want to be accurate.. doesn't matter what my 'opinion' is.
