Computer repair jitters
I have a new vid card for my W7 desktop. It uses motherboard stuff now, and the VGA quit working a few months ago. Its an ATI Radeon HD 5450 -- which is on Dell's list of suitable upgrades.
I am just a bit hesitant because the instructions say to uninstall the old vid drivers, power down, install the card -- THEN install the new ones.
I have this vision of a blank screen.
I plan to make a new system image just before I start, and I have a repair CD, but I'd like to know what to expect. Will it come up in some kind of default low res format? The manual is delightfully unclear about that.
I'd appreciate comments from folks who have done similar. This is my DD computer, and it will be inconvenient to have it down for any length of time.
Thanks,
hj
Not sure what you are looking for???

If the VGA quit working how are you going to make an image with no display??
If you have a display then the VGA is not bad...
Onto your next issue..
If you are currently running the Video card on the motherboard and you want to install a new card then just install the new card and when it powers up it should be using a default VGA driver..
Then you can install the disk that came with the card
There is no need to uninstall the previous driver...
Lastly you can disable the onboard card in the BIOS or through Device manager..
Better in the BIOS
Hope this helps
Right now, I'm using HDMI out -- the VGA quit some time ago. The monitor reports that there is an usupported screen resolution or something like that when you try to use VGA.
The manual that came with this board says to uninstall the previous driver before swapping them out. Why, I have no idea, but possibly there can be conflicts.
I was hoping that somebody would say that there is a default video driver that takes over. Hopefully that will allow me to continue to see something.
I will try to contact support, but I think that they've already moved on from this 'ancient ' vid card ( I think that it's actually only a couple of years old, but the support site mentioned in the manual isn't there any more).
Thanks for the info.

You can run more than one video card...
The manufacturer is just covering their **** by saying remove the old driver..
Yes the computer will still function if you remove the driver..
Windows has a default driver built in...
That is what gets used when you boot into safe mode..
