I have been having a problem with my 76 F100 FWD. When I make a very sharp right turn, the right front wheel starts to lock up. It doesn’t completely lockup or skid, but it makes a noise like the tire is rubbing. It does thiswhen I am turning really sharply to the right (only to the right) like when I am pulling into a parking space. I jacked up the front end and turned the wheels to each side and turned them by hand, and they turned freely, even when the steering was turned to the right all the way. I also could not see anywherewhere the tire was rubbing on anything. Could this be an alignment problem? Iam not sure what else to check.
Yes, 4 wheel drive. I greased all the steering components, didn't make any difference. I even looked under when it was back on the ground with the wheel turned all the way to the right but couldnt see anything rubbing or that looked wierd.
Your tire could very well be rubbing on something and your just not seeing it, make some chalk marks on the inside and see if they get rubbed off, also check your ball joints and make sure there is no free play in the wheel bearings. The answer to your problem will be visual somehow.
ah ha- I feel dumb now- it turns out the tire is rubbing- it is barely hitting the radius arm with the edge of the tire- only on the right side. I got new wheels, same tires put on them, a while back and it must have moved the tire in just enough so it hits on a sharp turn.
I there any way to adjust the steering so it stops before it hits? or a way to shim the wheel out just a tad on the lugs to keep it from hitting? It just barely rubs, but I dont want to damage my tire.
There should be a bolt on the inside of the knuckle that is the steering stop. You can try and adjust it out a bit so the knuckle can only turn so far. If you can't get it to move then you can have someone build up a bit of weld on the top of it to make it hit sooner.
