My 54 F100 has a Dana 44 rear axle. Although I already have a 9" to swap in, I am curious to know if it is possible to swap in a modern carrier with lower gears to change the ratio of the old Dana 44 from 3.98 to something like 3.25 or 3.00?
Hey Paul! Sorry no one has gotten to you. I'm sure you've already made the swap to the 9". Both are approx. the same size and the drag is pretty much even between them.
And yes, you can do any up-grades you wish with modern components. They are all the same. You may have the 28 spline axles, and may want to stick with them. The stronger 31 spline axles are useful fro big horse power rigs. You may be able to get away with a 20.1 with an auto tranny. A 3:50.1 with a standard tranny is great in the city traffic.
Talk with you later. Can you post some pictures of your rig?
Hi, Jim. Yes, I'll post some more pictures of my rig on my gallery. I've been slowly getting the original engine back together. I haven't done much else with it lately so it still looks rough.
Hey Paul! Nice 54'! looks like a lot of work has already been accomplished and it's taking shape. I really love the step-side trucks! With some chrome wheels and baby-moon hub caps!
I'm patient.... I'll wait for more! HEE HEE!
Talk with you later....
