New guy with old questions
First step was I already picked up most of the parts needed to convert the truck to a dual bowl master cylinder, keeping it 4 wheel manual drum. The question on this is, does a 4 wheel drum brake setup need residual pressure valves or not? I've heard comments both for and against them with an all drum brake setup.
The next step is dealing with the god awful Mr Gasket universal 3 speed floor shifter. changing gears is like trying to stir a bucket of gravel with a wiffle ball bat. The two replacement options would be a Hurst Indy shifter for around $220, or the Hurst Master shifter which is around $330 with the install kit. Is there that much of a notable difference between the Indy and the Master shifters?
On Thursday I'm driving down to pick up most of the parts I need to do the power steering conversion, the gearbox, pitman arm, and firewall mounting bracket. I already have a 390 power steering pump with the brackets that came off a 64 Thunderbird I'm parting out. My crank pulley is already a multi groove so I'm good there. The donor gearbox is coming off a 77 so it should be a saginaw. Is there any reason to run a fluid cooler with the Saginaw box or is that just overkill?
The machine shop near me said they can easily shorten the steering column since I'm not going to be using the column shifter.
Sorting through the FE parts I collected over the years, I have a MSD billet distributor and a Blue Thunder dual plane intake, along with the Autolite 4 barrel off the 64 Thunderbird. Eventually I'd like to get all this parts on the truck.
The hardest job ahead of me is convincing my ten year old nephew that I really don't want to go with his plan of painting the truck flat black and lots of red pinstriping, heh.
