Hi, I'm new here and wasn't sure if this was the proper forum for this question, but it seemed the closest. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry.
I have a 1990 full size Bronce XLT, 4WD, automatic trans. I recently had a problem w/the ignition; when turning the truck on, over the past few weeks, I had to turn the key harder and harder to get it to turn over. Finally, yesterday, even turning as hard as I could - nothing.
So I took the steering wheel off, replaced the lock cylinder, should be no problem now, right? Wrong. Now the shifter will not shift out of Park. It's just plain, darn stuck. Even with the lock cylinder out of the column, the shifter will not move. I have a Haynes book, but it doesn't show an exploded view of the steering column (right before it goes under the dashboard) where it seems to be locked or stuck somehow.
My question- Has anyone ever had this problem and solved it?
Or does someone have a different manual other than the Haynes that has an exploded view of the steering wheel from the s/wheel itself to where it goes under the dashboard?
I thank you guys in advance for any help you can give me. I apologize for the length of the post and again, if I put this in the wrong forum. Thanks!
Cheryl (Panheadchick)
I should add that even with the lock cylinder installed correctly, th shifter is still stuck. So with the cylinder in or out, the shifter will not move at all. thanks again
Sounds like someone gave you the wrong cylinder. There has to be a releif in the cylinder to enable the shift lever to operate properly. Can you compare the two to see any differences? I'm not a lock-smith, but have a couple of pennies here. Just a thought.. Talk with you later....
Are you pressing on the brake pedal when trying to get it out of park? There may be nothing wrong, just that the brake/shifter interlock isn't being released.......
I have a 90 f-150 that has the same problem. I relaced the cylinder and the ignition switch. With the correct ones i might add, and nothing. And I did mush the brake pedal when try'n. But nothing. If you get any answers would you let me know pretty please.
I had a simular problem on a 95 Aerostar. It didn't get that bad,I took it to a tranny shop and they adjusted the shift linkage some where under the dash and that fixed it.Mine got hard to shift into drive and the pointer didn't quite line up with the gear I was in.
