I have 94 with EOD transmission (if that maters). The volt meter has been hanging around ~12v when it is started then after 2 seconds jumps up to 13-14 volts where is should be. Today, I put new tires on and when I got the truck back the battery light is on and the volt meter reads 12v.
The voltage at the battery is 11.54 with the truck running, it was 12.3 before I started it. All the wires are in good condition and the connections are tight.
The G3 appears to be internally regulated. I assume my only course of action is to pull the alternator and find someone to test it. Any other suggestions. I am assuming she wants a necklace to go with her new shoes.
Pull the alt out, remove the regulator/brush assembly, more then likely the brushes are warn down to nothing, get new brushes (under20 bucks) and put it back together, no need to replace what isn't broken.

If you have a lot of miles on this unit (150,000+) you will want to look at the slip rings on the rotor where the brushes run. They are notorious for wearing through the copper layer. That being said a whole kit to refurb a G3 isn't a lot of money. Ebay shows a lot of options
I pull the alternator, took the regulator off and the brushes were in bad shape and the inner copper ring has a grove wore in it. It was likely the original and the truck has 240k on the odometer. Being able to replace the main were items (brushes and regulator) without removing the alternator is genius. I wish the thermostat was that easy.
I went to Autozone and it failed all test but they did not have one in stock. I am not sure why I bother stopping there. If they have the part it is wrong half the time.
Advanced Auto did have 3 choices in stock. $170 for new, $140 for reman with lifetime warranty, and $120 for reman with 1 year warranty. I took the $120 because the truck will be luck to see 2,000 miles a year.
Glad you got it going. I do repair / rebuild these. I can do one for about $40-$50. that being said it is not everybody's cup of tea. The one thing I do when I do get a reman from the parts houses is make them test the new one before I leave the store. It is really scary how many right out of the box are bad.

I've been down that road with starters on the wife's old 4 runner, re man and new. I changed 4 starters in less than three years, at least Napa has lifetime warranty.
