Cool Turbo Problems..........

I had to pull the turbo on my 97' 7.3 L it's been a real nightmare so far. I have everything loose, all the bolts in the fun places on the pedestal.
Now I have another problem, how the heck do you disconnect the actuator rod from the pedestal to what ever the hell it is. I have little experience with these diesels and unfortunately less money or I'd put some hot mod on it. I also have to replace the fuel pump so any pointers on that would help immensely. The information I've received on this forum has been great so far and believe me I need help. I'm a disabled vet and leaning over underneath that hood is killing me. Please help me with your knowledge. I have no one in the area who can or will help and for that matter no mechanic's at all. I live in the boonies and need to get my truck back on the road soon. If anybody lives in the Kingman or Lake Havasu area is on this forum and wants to make a few bucks helping me please give me a call. 928-486-9440 Thanks, Doug

Ok the pedestal, actuator rod and the turbo will all come off in one piece. You will need to remove two nuts and two bolts from the collector to the turbo( I think the nuts were 15mm and the bolt 13mm). 4 pedestal bolts (either 8mm or 10 mm, I can't remember) two on the front and two at the back. the downpipe clamp and intake boot and the ebpv wires. That will get the turbo off. It's a *****.
Remove the two bolts and fuel lines (including banjo bolt) from the pump. Make sure not to loose the gaskets because some pumps don't come with them. And turn the motor over until the pump pops up. When you pull the pump out make sure to be gentle. It has been known by some that the plunger pops out of the pump remaining in the engine and you don't want to have try to get it out. Good luck.

Wink Never Mind this thread....I finally got it licked.

I am going to do a follow up write up on this subject so novices like myself have something to go by. All in all it is one hell of a job for a young healthy person. I finally found the spring lock on the actuator rod and was able to pop it off. I loosened the bolts on the fuel pump and had my wife tap the starter...when I saw the fuel pump move upwards, I unbolted it completely and wiggled it out of there with the tappet intact. Pretty happy right now.. Tomorrow I put the new pump in and assemble everything.....I'll be happier when it's all done and the old girl is back on the road.

Thanks to all that offered advice on previous threads, the article on changing the fuel pump with out removing the turbo is great. The only bad thing is I don't have torch's to heat and bend wrench's with so couldn't do it that way.
