Ok, so my 97 Powerstroke has been running a little rough and not quite running right at high RPM, then today I noticed when I was changing the fuel filter that the fuel pump is leaking a little, so I guess it needs a fuel pump. How do you know the fuel pump rod is up so you can pull it out without dropping it in the engine? My turbo is little worn out too, I was thinking I may need a turbo, the wheel wobbles up and down. How much is a turbo, where is the best place to get one. I may look into a bigger turbo, the truck already has a bigger downpipe on it, 4" I think, I don't know I didn't put it on.
Unbolt it and turn the engine over a bit at a time. The pump should pop up when the cam hits it. Or so I've read. But it seems to be an accepted practice.
There are some options for turbos but not many without significant mods. I'm sure some of the sponsors here have some products. This is a good source for rebuilds and parts. He also has a ebay store.
Up pipe donuts might need to be replaced while your there.
yup, un bolt the banjo (big 1 1/4" bolt on back of fuel pump) and 2 hold down bolts on fuel pump, wiggle it around a bit and see if it rises upward on it's own, don't pull it out, have somebody bump the starter while your watching the pump and watch it rise, it'll only come up about 3/4 of an inch, jently slide a finger under the pump and hold the pump rod to keep it in the pump and slide the pump out, I greased my new one up so it wouldn't fall out when I reinstalled it, might have to tweak a box wrench a little to fit the big banjo wrench.
I used a craftsman 1 1/4 combination wrench on mine. The box end angle is just right for this job. Search JimWilsonMasonery on this forum, he made a homemade ratchet for this job and it looks sweet. Next time I do mine I will sacrafice a ratchet and make one.
