Yesterday my 86 f150 4.9l straight six was dead so I gave it a jump let it run for a few minutes to charge then I came back out about 20 minutes later and it was dead again so I jumped it again and on the way home at stop lights when I put the clutch in sometimes my dash lights would dim or everything inside the cab would go off also my lights would also dim when the clutch was in once I would let the clutch out and start moving again everything would come back on. So do I need a new alternator?
I would start with the basic checks first. Make sure every battery cable connection is clean and tight, from the battery to the engine/frame/solenoid/starter. Lights that dim/get brighter with varying RPM indicate the alt is charging at least somewhat.
Also check the connections at the alt.
If that doesn't help, you need to have the battery and alt tested. These can be tested in the truck, or removed first.
86 could have either the older external regulator, or the internal regulator.
